Personal Commitment

  • Use the platform as the Chief Legal Officer of UnitedHealth Group to foster and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion at UnitedHealth Group, the law firms with which we work, and the legal profession.
  • Maintain and foster a safe and respectful workplace culture where lawyers and legal professionals of all backgrounds feel like they belong and can thrive personally and professionally.
  • Ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion remain core values of our Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs Group and that our recruitment, development, retention, and advancement of our talent reflects these core values.
  • Ensure that the law firms with which we work demonstrate a commitment to shared values of diversity, equity, and inclusion within their organizations and the legal profession.

Organizational Commitment

  • Commit to a shared understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion and how the people and the work of the Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs Group reflect that shared understanding.
  • Ensure that all Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs managers understand the business imperative to recruit, develop, advance, and retain diverse talent and engage in best practices to achieve this imperative.
  • Engage in succession planning for the Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs Group that consistently identifies and includes diverse talent.
  • Expect the law firms with which we work to demonstrate their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion through diversity of their leadership, staffing of UnitedHealth Group matters with diverse teams, developing and advancing their diverse talent, and regularly reporting on their diversity metrics.
  • Actively support UnitedHealth Group’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Office and seek opportunities to engage and collaborate with that Office, including engagement by the Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs Group’s diversity council.
  • Continue to support and partner with organizations such as the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity that are dedicated to advancing diversity within the legal profession.
  • Continue to sponsor a cohort of Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Fellows and support continued connectivity between current Fellows and alumni Fellows.
  • Continue membership in Twin Cities Diversity in Practice with a focus on hiring underrepresented 1L summer clerks and strengthening our diverse legal talent pipeline.
  • Include diversity, equity, and inclusion topics in Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs Group Town Hall meetings.
  • Focus pro bono efforts and resources on activities that address racial and social injustice and otherwise serve diverse and underrepresented groups.
  • Review diversity data to assess progress on diversity, equity, and inclusion within Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs.
