LCLD Alumni Travel to Pacific Northwest for 12th Annual Leadership Symposium
SEATTLE, WA – In June 2023, over 330 LCLD Alumni traveled to Seattle, Washington, for the 12th Annual LCLD Alumni Leadership Symposium. This year’s theme, “Connections,” was woven throughout the three days of reuniting, learning, and celebrating.
The Community Service event, co-sponsored by Microsoft and Davis Wright Tremaine, kicked off on Thursday morning with over 50 Alumni in attendance at the Davis Wright Tremaine Seattle office. LCLD Members Lisa Tanzi, Corporate Vice President & General Counsel of Customer Experience & Policy at Microsoft, and Scott MacCormack, Firmwide Managing Partner at Davis Wright Tremaine, opened the session and shared welcome remarks. The Alumni split into groups to focus on two service projects. For the first project, Alumni partnered with Mapping Segregation, D.C., to identify and map racially restrictive covenants that exist in the nation’s capital. For the second, Microsoft led a Virtual Records Clinic, where Alumni assisted justice-impacted individuals work towards clearing their convictions in King County.
Following the Community Service event, the Alumni Leadership Symposium officially kicked off with a welcome from Symposium Chair and 2018 Fellow Lisa Collins. She then introduced three distinguished speakers for a fireside chat on “Presenting to the Board”: Michael Deal, Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at LCLD Member organization Amazon; Rick Palmore, LCLD Founder & Board Chair Emeritus; and Robert Grey, LCLD President.
Alumni were presented with two options for interactive breakout sessions: one led by Jason Levin, Founder of Ready, Set, Launch, on maintaining and growing your network, and one led by Kori Carew, Founder of Bridge68 LLC, on authenticity and positioning yourself to level up.
On Thursday evening, the Alumni gathered at The Shop, a car- and motorcycle-themed venue, to celebrate this year’s award winners. 2013 Fellow Bonnie Lau and 2012 Fellow Maritza Okata received the 2023 Rick Palmore Awards; 2022 Pathfinder Toks Arowojolu was named the inaugural Rising Star Award winner; and the 2018 Fellows, 2016 Pathfinders, and Mid-Atlantic region all brought home the 2022 All In! Participation Is Key Award.
Kim Anthony, a UCLA and Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Inductee, four-time U.S. National Champion, and international gold-medalist, opened the second day of Symposium as our keynote speaker, joined on stage by Symposium Vice Chair and 2020 Pathfinder Patrick Fang. That afternoon, LCLD Alumni Riqui Bonilla (2018 Pathfinder), Anita Lam (2018 Pathfinder), Bonnie Lau (2013 Fellow), and Jaimala Pai (2012 Fellow) took the stage for a panel moderated by Lisa Collins (2018 Fellow), where they shared personal stories and candid advice for developing and managing in-house/outside counsel relationships.
Following the panel, Alumni had the opportunity to make new connections or reconnect with old friends during a new networking component, “Drinks & Dialogue.” They continued to connect during the beloved Dine Arounds at restaurants across Seattle, and at the After-Hours Party co-sponsored by Amazon and K&L Gates.
After breakfast on Saturday, a panel of Alumni presented initiatives through which LCLD Alumni can engage more fully with the program. The panel included Richik Sarkar, 2017 Fellow and Chair of the Alumni Executive Council; Sushant Mohan, 2017 Pathfinder and member of the Pathways to Equity Committee; Christophe Mosby, 2013 Fellow and Chair of the Sustainable Partnership Program; and Randy Lehner, 2019 Fellow and Vice Chair of the Coaching Circles + GC Mentoring Program.
