2025 LCLD 1L Summer Associate Program – New York

A&O Shearman is now accepting summer associate applications from first-year law students interested in our 2025 Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Scholars Program.

What is LCLD?

Formed in 2009, the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) is an organization of corporate chief legal officers and law firm managing partners dedicated to creating a truly diverse legal profession. Its mission is to significantly advance diversity and inclusion in the industry. Additional information regarding LCLD can be found online: https://www.lcldnet.org/about/.

What are the benefits of being an LCLD Scholar?

In addition to your summer experience, LCLD Scholars attend a conference with LCLD interns from across the country. This conference is not only an opportunity for first-year law students to meet their peers, but also introduces students to a network of mentors & conference leaders open to sharing their career perspectives. This past summer, conference programming was held virtually.

LCLD Scholars also have a dedicated LinkedIn group and receive invitations to Group Mentoring Program events during the summer.

How is the A&O Shearman LCLD Scholars Program Structured?

As an A&O Shearman summer associate, you will spend up to 10 weeks in our New York office and will be fully integrated into the 2025 summer program. Our New York summers participate in our RotationPlus work assignment system, which offers students the opportunity to work on real legal issues across various practice areas. Summer associates will rotate through two practice groups in which they have expressed an interest but have the additional opportunity to take on work outside of their assigned practices through an internal assignment portal. In recent years, our LCLD Scholars have also completed a short secondment with an A&O Shearman client to better understand the nature of the legal services we provide.

What types of training and development will A&O Shearman LCLD Scholars receive?

During the summer, we maintain an engaging “Summer Associate University (SAU)” calendar with substantive training programs on such topics as Legal Research and Writing, Negotiation Skills, Diversity & Inclusion, and Wellbeing & Resilience. Additionally, summer associates gain tremendous practical experience and on-the-job training.

What is A&O Shearman looking for in a 1L LCLD Scholar?

Among other things, we are looking for a first-year law student with top academic performance, strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ideal candidates have excellent judgment, a commitment to advancing diversity & inclusion and an interest in practicing law in a global law firm environment.

What is the compensation for an A&O Shearman LCLD Scholar?

A&O Shearman’s compensation is aligned with the standard market-rate salary scale. LCLD Scholars are paid an Entry-Level Associate Salary of $225,000, prorated for dates of employment.
